Voice hoarse, dazed by the media glare, Hollinghurst breaks into awkward jig, blames acid reflux

Oops, sorry. Wrong celebrity. Anywho, a week before the Bookers, San Francisco Chronicle reporter Edward Gutthmann met up with Alan Hollinghurst at a Union Square hotel while the author was in town promoting The Line of Beauty. A week and a Booker later they catch up by phone, with Hollinghurst reporting “I’ve just been interviewed for the last 10 hours continuously. Had about one hour’s sleep last night.”

Incidentally, astounding parallels suggest themselves:
Hollinghurst life story: “I was a gay, middle-class only child from the provinces, fairly innocent of real life, with a precocious knowledge of music, literature and architecture.”

CAAF life story: “”I was a [sexually incoherent], middle-class only child from the provinces, fairly innocent of real life, with a precocious knowledge of [Duran Duran], literature and [the mall].”

It is so refreshing to read these profiles and realize the many qualities one has in common with literature’s leading lights.

  2. Ah, yes. “So Red The Rose,” where Nick and Simon’s sense of high camp and gothic sensibility were allowed to blazon forth, unchecked by the sobering “rock” influence of John, Roger and Andy. I always like to imagine that it was Andy who rebelled, necessitating the split, like “Dudes, first you get me in the eyeliner. Next thing you know we’re prancing around in purple velvet capes and full foundation. And I can’t play guitar with this fucking rose between my teeth.”

(I admit I forgot the name of that cassette but just looked it up at the Apple Music Store; found myself wondering whether to download “Election Day.”)
